I traveled to Midland Friday for Courtney and Josh's wedding. I like Midland. It's a quick drive, over and back and the people are nice. AND when you get a couple like these two, with their hearts in the right place, it's refreshing! You get inspired to pray for your kids, pray for their spouses and just insprired spiritually! It was a great weekend!

I'll post some from the rehearsal and the wedding later. Becuase they were limited on time at their reception, Josh's dad wanted them to have lots of good time with all their friends that traveled for the wedding. They had a dinner and dance with a DJ. And this bunch can boogie!

smitty's wedding

focal length: 16.0mm
exposure time: 1/400

HA! It was so funny when I first heard her say it. First of all, Laura is such a doll. Complete doll. Looks like one, talks like one, just what I would call a sweet, little doll. And I spent a good part of the day with just her. You see, this past weekend, I 2nd shot with Kym Skiles of F8 Studio. Laura and Jonathan are the bride and groom. Laura calls her man, "Smitty". His last name is Smith. I love it! (hence the title of this blog post) I giggled when I first heard it escape her lips, but now that I've heard it, it's so him!

F8 Studio are my photography Gods. I've been following their work since the beginning of my photography career in weddings, which for me began in late 90's. I worship the images that fall out of their cameras. I disect them to see just how they do it, where they were, and freak out that I can't even begin to "hit in their league". They make it seem so easy and simple and clean, which is what I love, yet, it's not easy! It's incredibly hard to get those moments like they do, so when the opportunity came up to 2nd shoot with them in San Antonio, I jumped, leaped, begged them to let me do it.

The BIG bonus is that I got Kym. She's a partner with Gary and Huy and she totally ROCKS! I'm a total hyper spaz at weddings, and Kym is an even cool calm, oozing with retro looks and style. Definitely my kind of girl. We had an amazing time shooting together and I was so bummed that we couldn't hang out longer, but hey, another day perhaps. Maybe July? Hmm....

Anyway, here are my favorites from San Antonio. You'll notice that underneath each image, I've included the data from each file. Many of you have emailed me and posted comments here, asking about lenses and exposure and just plain, how I do it. So there it is.

I hope you enjoy!

The location was AMAZING! It used to be an old convent that housed a girls school. They now teach art here and have had the chapel restored, but maintained it's initial charm. It is absolutely breathtaking!

I should have changed my fstop to at least 4 or 5.6, but geez...I'd just left the hotel with the girls and forgot to change the settings on my camera.

I loved this shot of Laura's dad with some of her maids! Oh, gosh! As a Mom of daughter's I can spot a Daughter Dad anywhere, and he is definitely one who gave his heart away the 2nd these girls were born. Just a great face and a great spirit!

Details are important, very important. And as much detail shots as I take at a wedding, I never feel like it is enough! Seriously, I don't. Even if it's 100's of details images, there's always one shot I missed or didn't take. Drives me insane when going back through the files. But I know the day goes by in an absolute blur for the bride, so the details she's worked on for months, I want to capture for her to remember.

This is Laura, standing outside the bride's room, just at the beginning of her aisle. You can just see the wheels turning in her head as she's anticipating the "what's next" part of her life. I love the tension and the promise in this photo. It's a crying shame I didn't move my bag. Geez... You can see it just to the right of Laura on the ground. I'm blaming it on the muscians. They left a gear bag there, right?

I loved their vows. They didn't write them, but they constructed them let's say, from vows at a previous wedding they had witnessed. They are biblical in nature and word and commitment, yet simple in words and modern in feel. Well, except for the submission part. LOL This shot is of the girls helping Laura go over them.

Okay, definitely take note here. This is the way you decorate a chapel. I mean, I've been in some churches where you can't even tell it's a church anymore, due to all the material and flowers and crap that people rent and HIDE the church with. Not that some churches don't need to be hidden, but if you are getting married in a place that is old world and just classic beautiful, let the church stand alone and simply "adorn it". There's a fine line there, I think in some cases. But Laura and her Mom did an amazing job of just adorning this church. The candles against the hard wood looked amazing!

Okay, I go back and forth on this one. Yes...a total mistake. My flash didn't fire, but hey, I kind of like the sweeping mood to this one. You can definitely tell it's a bride. This will be my "ala Beckstead" shot of the day. LOL

I was way under on this shot, but love the way it turned out. I was actually holding a light stand and helping Kym and really shoulding have fired this off without being able to read the LCD or at least the in camera meter, but I fired it off from my belly because I was so excited about this shot! Total American Gothic to me. Just needed a shovel or a pitch fork. LOL

We had to take some outside to really get a feel for just how OLD World this place really is, but we were losing light fast. We just braced ourselves with tight arms, and held our breaths and fired off a succession of 3 in a row. If you do that, it seems that one, usualy the middle frame, will be sharp. I love this!

Yikes! That's a slow shutter! But it works! The harder you try for something, the more you learn and figure it out. Just look at this one! LOVE IT! Total yummy light coming from the street lamp across the street. I love that you can see the twilight of dusk setting and it could be a couple from 100 years ago! Total YUM!

Again, I fired off 3 in a row and the middle was the keeper. Keep at it! Push it! You have the shot in your head, you know the light is there, keep working it to get what you want and love!

As we were taking photographs, the guests were having cocktails down by the river. The inside where they were just married, is transformed into an amazing dining Hall! LOVE it!

I didn't take very many reception photos. I was Kym's "light girl". She has an amazing style for flash photography that just so ROCKS. I'm dying to try it at my next wedding. If you are there, watch out! I hope I don't knock you in the head! Yipes!

for whitney

Before I left for Boston, I helped out fellow photographer, Shann Renee with a scheduling snag. Didn't mind at all, especially after I saw these killer heels.

Whitney, your sneak peek is up. Just click HERE. If you read this before you get my email, it's password protected. I included the password in the email.

Thanks!

OH, gosh! I can't believe I'm home! 24 hours of airports and planes and I finally made it. I will spare you all the gory details, and instead excite you with images from my first, hopefully not my last, Boston Wedding!

As usually, there are more on their "sneak peek". Just click HERE. I hope to have the slide show up soon, so check back for updates!

The first shot? The one above? I LOVE THIS SHOT! I got to ride in a classic, original, a Rolls Royce. It was such a beautiful car, and such a beautiful day! I had to mention that shot because it seriously was a great day! We are going through one of the tunnels on the way to the reception and yes, I will shamelessly admit, I asked them to kiss. But seriously, they didn't mind, because the two kissed several times and for much longer than what the shot needed. Geez....newlyweds.

I wish I could remember the hairdressers name, I'm so sorry if you are reading this, but she we went to Louis of Boston. (Kate, correct me if I'm wrong.) and she has been working with Kate and her amazingly healthy hair, for years. I love what she did with it!

We couldn't have asked for a better Boson Day! Or so I'm told. LOL

We strolled around campus for a bit. Kate went to school at Wellesly, which is where the ceremony took place, and we spent some quick minutes just walking a bit. Oh, my gosh! You could take photographs here for hours! But we didn't have hours, so we quickly strolled down the road and back.

Amazing scenery and amazing dresses! I loved the color! Indigo Blue...chosen by Kate's sister, Sarah.

and then the boys! Never a dull moment, and never a dull joke.

I think I'll go to Boston

I'm in Boston! YEP! And it's gorgeous! The zipper on my wedding pants broke and I forgot my razor, but I don't care! I'm in Boston! Did you read that? I'm in BOSTON!

Way cool...

Kate is marrying Dave tomorrow, but tonight we had such a great time together, enjoying family and friends, and getting to know each other.

This is Dave's grandpa. Quite a "spit fire" if you know what I mean. LOL

This little guy is giving me a run for my money! I better hope he doesn't grow up and move to Lubbock!

The wedding takes place tomorrow at Wellsley College, which is where Kate attended. It is BEAUTIFUL! Old world style, with such charachter and amazing glass. I'm so excited, because you seriously can not take a bad shot in this place. WOW!

Aren't they just the cutest! Dave gave me the personal tour of Boston from the hotel to the rehearsal last night. I have to come back some day and really soak in this city!

brooke + brian

What a way to spend a Sunday afternoon! Look at what a Happy Day, May 6, 2007 was!

Brooke and Brian were married Sunday, at the Merkett Alumni Center with reception following at the Frazier Pavilion. It was an amazing day with such great colors and fun and amazing moments! I'll share what I can, but you can view many more by clicking HERE.

Brooke's dad, needed an "adjustment". LOL

Which Brooke found very funny.

Check out that hair! This is Brooke's sister, Courtney.

Yum! I loved the colors! All the maids wore these lovely shoes with the color of the wedding for bows. So cute!

I was in another room when I heard singing and laughter and found Brook and her mom, Andra in BED! Too cute! She was singing the song she walked down to at her wedding, to Brooke. Great moment!

Dad had a "list" of things to do, and here's he is getting a "well done" from the Bride!

Grandma drove the limo!

Brooke and Brian exchanged gifts before the wedding and this is Brooke anticipating what she is pretty sure in that box! YEP! Diamond earrings! She was so funny!

She carried a family Bible that was tied to her bouquet.

So many Happy Moments this day!

Lovely maids in a row provided a fabulous background.

They saw each other ahead of time. It was a great moment and Brian could not quit saying WOW! I asked him later how he felt and he said, and I quote..."She took my breath away." And she did!

I love this picture because you can see the tears in their eyes! Happy Tears!

They wore their Grandfather's rings during the ceremony. This is it, here.

My FAVORITE flower girl ever! I told her many time that day, and her mom, but she was GREAT! She loved being with the girls and took her job so seriously. She was such a joy and I'm taking her to all my weddings with flower girls so she can show them how it's done! HA!

Such a Happy Walk to her Groom!

Okay, folks, get the guys in your life and make sure you tell them this. Better yet, show them this picture! I LOVE IT WHEN A GUY GRABS HIS BRIDE'S FACE DURING THE KISS! Oh, my gosh! This gets me every time and I cry! I totally cry! It's like he can't hug her or he will break her, but he pulls her to him and they kiss! I loved it! Well done, Brian!

Another amazing cake by Vida of Sweet Temptations. She's the BEST!

Jones Sodas were served, as was popcorn and a GREAT slideshow of the couple and their family. SO much fun!

A moment alone before their BIG Exit!

Congratulations you two! I had a wonderful Sunday spending it with you and your families. Tell everyone hello and Brian, I hope you passed that final on Monday. LOL

jessica

WOW! What fun this was! Last night I photographed Jessica, a Graduate from Coronado. We had a great time chasing the lite last night and the tall green wheat field was a perfect way to end such an easy session. Jessica was a breeze to photograph! Very comfortable in her skin and hardly any direction at all. In fact, first shot out of the camera, is next. One of them anyway.

Thanks, Jessica! You did AWESOME!

sarah

I can't believe she's a GRADUATE! Oh, my...

This is Sarah and I've known her family for years, thanks to my daughter and her baby sister playing sports together. Sarah is graduating this year from Corondao and even won the coveted spot of commencement speaker! GO SARAH! I have to say, I'm not surprised. Very well poised and such a keen eye for coolness, I've quietly admired Sarah for years. She's the girl I wanted to be instead of the goon I was in HS. No worries, though...the girl can be goofy, too! But those images, my dear, are just for me and Mom. HA!

We spent Saturday evening finding cool spots to go with her ultra cool clothes. You can view more of Sarah by clicking HERE.

jason

This is Jason Kuhn. You should write that name down. I've heard him sing. You will, too, someday. I spent the better part of Saturday afternoon following him around Lubbock and getting to know his better angles. He's a dad, a husband, a guy that can blush when you mention his wife, a singer, a performer, a believer.

Thanks, Jason. I had a wonderful afternoon.
